'get lost'
traveler guide

Summer 2016 - experience design course
Purpose

Design, create, and test through iterations a travel guide with the purpose to create a facilitated wandering travel experience for a user in a foreign city.

design elements
  • App concept that takes advantage of a city's natural public transportation infrastructure

  • Aimed towards tourists that like to travel without detailed itineraries

  • Basic & readable lay-out of the subway map network

  • Intuitive Icons for ease of use

design narrative

Our group was tasked with creating and iterating upon a travel product, during our study abroad course in Budapest. After a brainstorm, my group decided that some of the most rewarding & exciting travel experiences come from ‘stumbling upon’ novel places. Somewhere that didn't come from the front page of a travel magazine, but somewhere that surprised and delighted you - that you can share about when you get back home. This map utilizes a city’s public transit system to direct the user to a specific area to suit a need or a desire. This way, the user is discovering experiences for themselves, not reading about it first and knowing exactly what they will see.

initial concept

The first prototype we created was for our class's trip to Vienna. We did research beforehand to create a paper map prototype for the city.

After having another group test this prototype, we gained feedback on the project, and used this feedback to create our iteration for Budapest.

final concept

The main change that came out of this feedback was the desire to 'look less like a tourist' and not have to carry a physical paper map around. With this in mind, we created our final prototype as an app mockup in InVision, which you can find here.
